C. grades 5 and 6
D. grades 3 and 4

- CGSV can decline an entry or request a change in piece selection prior to acceptance.
- Entry fees will be refunded if a competitor is declined.
- Each entrant can enter at only one level.
- There is no age restriction: a mature player can enter in category A, or a young player can enter in category E.
- The acceptance of an entrant into any category for the purposes of awarding prizes is at the discretion of CGSV and/or the judges on competition day.
- The judges' decisions in all competition matters is final and not negotiable.
- A relationship with an adjudicator, eg teacher-student, will not preclude entry. Please declare any relationship on the day for transparency.
- Competitors must perform new pieces each time they enter, eg if you played piece X last year or the year before, you must play a different piece this year.
- Entrants can perform from memory or from sheet music, but must provide sheet music for the judge(s) to review during performance.
- A previous winner of a category prize A to E cannot compete in the same category again.  A competitor can enter in any category, regardless of age or formal qualifications. For example, a mature member who achieved grade 8 in 1990 might decide to compete in category C to reflect current capabilities. Likewise, a young student studying at VCASS might compete in category A. Your chosen level should match your skill level, and should be discussed with your teacher (if applicable).

Competitors must play two pieces - one "own choice" and one set piece from the list below. in category A competitors can: play more than than two pieces, but must not exceed the time limit; substitute other Australian pieces of a similar standard for their set piece.

The total performance times cannot exceed 15 minutes for category A, 8 minutes for categories B and C, 5 minutes for categories D and E. Set pieces are Australian works selected predominantly from exam syllabuses, such as AMEB and VCA. Set pieces can be purchased (at a discount for CGSV members) via Hans Music Spot. The "own choice" piece should be at a comparable level to the set piece (discuss with your teacher if in doubt), and can be from the set piece list.  The number of competitors in each category is limited. If a category is over-subscribed then CGSV can, at its discretion, decline further entries in that section or organize a pre-competition day audition process, eg by asking competitors to submit a visual or audio recording of their playing. Auditions will be considered part of the competition, and entry fees will not be refunded for entrants who are eliminated in this process.  PRIZES:

2011 Solo Competition Results
As we watched and listened, their precious sounds carried us into their sacred places and secrets; we reached infinite space and twilight glittered through the ancient glass.
Adjudicator: Dan McKay
Category E
Dan's remarks: Great performances, however it is time to start thinking about tone production and presentation. It is important to follow the rules of the competition, so one contestant was not eligible as they did not perform the set works.
One prize only - Will Armstrong
Category D
Dan's remarks: It is good to see that the students at this level are bowing and presenting themselves well and adjusting equipment before they start; tuning quietly, placement of sheet music if used, and facing the audience. The elements which discerned the first place was the tone production and full rounded tone.
1. Roger Wu 2. Ari Melican 3. Angie Watson
Category C
Dan's remarks: We will be hearing a lot from these performers in the future. I enjoyed every performance, where it was evident that they really got inside at least one piece: great sounds and textures. Make sure you acknowledge the audience more: smile, do not rush off, and create the illusion that you enjoyed it despite the nerves.
1. Jessop Maticevski-Schmack
2. equal Max Plitsch and Aife Pollard Larkin
3. Robin Gibson
Category B:
Dan's comments: This section was extra-ordinarily difficult to adjudicate. The performances were polished and well thought out. Jesse's interpretation of "The ancients" by Phillip Houghton was quite special and Mile's "Kondole and the corroboree" by Richard Charlton was full of beautiful moments. Don's performance was terrific.
1. Jesse Liang 2. Miles Johnston 3. Don Pham
Adjudicators: Dan McKay and Ken Murray
Open Section Category A: Sadie Bishop Award
Ken and Dan's remarks: Everyone had their great moments. There was a wide variety of repertoire with the old interpreted in a new way. We were moved by every performance.
Carny's performance was spectacular, well rounded and engaging.
1. Carney Tan - Fantasie Hongroise by Johann Kasper Mertz and Stele by Phillip Houghton
2. Olivia Hally - Short walk in the Rain Forest by Richard Charlton and Waltz 4 by Agustin Barrios
3. Dudi Shaul - Joaquín Rodrigo and Blackwater Caprice (1st movement) by Ross Edwards
Other awards:
Etiquette Award: Ari Melican for attention to detail in setting up etiquette and presentation.
Best Australian Composition Performance: Olivia Hally -Short walk in the Rain forest - Richard Charlton
President's Encouragement Award: Julia Bakowski for Bach's Allemande from the lute suite BWV 995
